Abstract

Financial risk is often defined as the unexpected variability or volatility of returns and thus includes both potential worse-than-expected as well as better than-expected returns. References to negative risk below should be read as applying to positive impacts or opportunity (e.g., for "loss" read "loss or gain") unless the context precludes this interpretation. The related term "hazard" is used to mean something that could cause harm. As risk carries so many different meanings there are many formal methods used to assess or to "measure" risk. Some of the quantitative definitions of risk are well-grounded in statistics theory and lead naturally to statistical estimates, but some are more subjective. For example in many cases a critical factor is human decision making. This study sample consist 120 respondents who are investors and invest in the securities firm at Batam. This study aims to analyze the political orientations that influence financial risk taking. Politic orientation used in this study that influence financial risk taking is economic orientation, social orientation, and interaction of social and economic orientation. Results from the study showed that the influence of social orientation has a significant positive effect on financial risk taking. For the orientation of economic variables have a significant negative effect on financial risk taking. And finally to the variable interaction social and economic orientation have a significant effect on financial risk taking. The study stated that men is more risk taker than women in making decisions and in terms of financial and educational, as well as parents’ background in entrepreneurship has a positive influence in financial risk taking.
