Abstract
Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) is an error reporting and diagnostic utility and it is considered as a part of IP suite. This protocol handles error and control messages. More specific, router and host use ICMP to send reports of problem about datagrams, ICMP messages are encapsulated and sent within IP datagram, While within ICMP packet there are two type message that describe the situation of the network. there are ICMP error message and ICMP query message. PING (Packet Internet Groper) is one of the method that commonly used by people to ensure the network is useable or not. PING itself is using ICMP to send the message if any problem occurred in the network. This paper evaluates the effect of ICMP ping flood attack over wireless network while the network is used for data transfer. ICMP flood occurs when ICMP pings overload a system with so many echo request that the system expends all its resources responding until it can no longer process valid network. This paper simulate and retrieve the throughput and queuing transmission delay between each PING packet that have been send over the network. the variety of each packet that have been send is between 5000bytes to 40000bytes. The result of this research is the maximum transmission delay of 16ms is calculated for attack packet size of 5000bytes with the intensity of 500 packet per second and will increase with increase in data packet size and increase in attacking intensity. Key Word: Computer Network, Wireless Network, ICMP ping flood, Data transfer.
