Abstract

In the engineering and manufacturing industry, several standards or manuals on operating specific procedures need to be followed, and most of them are only available in English, not Bahasa Indonesia. In this case, translation and a translator are needed. However, it is rarely found that source language and target language texts have the same meaning when translating. One of the strategies to achieve the equivalent meaning in the translation process from SL to TL is translation shift, and one of them is class shift. In this paper, the writer found class shifts in the engineering manual documents from a local engineering and manufacturing company named PT. Duta Dimensi. The method used in this study is a qualitative method for the purpose of analysing and investigating class shifts in the Indonesian translation of engineering manual documents. Therefore, this paper aims to help readers, translators, researchers, or even people who work in the related industry to obtain syntactically correct translations that can boost their understanding of the related manual document, resulting in the enhancement in knowledge, work effectiveness and performance.
