Abstract

Dividend is an importance factor for each company that is able to attract investors in making an investment in the future and maximize the company’s operations. The management faces a dilemma whether their firm’s profit is distributed to pay dividend or to retain the earnings for reinvestment in improving the firm’s growth. The main purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of lagged dividend per share, earnings per share, cash flow per share, size, debt to total assets, controlling shareholders, government ownership, life cycle, tangibility and free cash flow towards dividend per share. This research object consists of companies listed in the Malaysia Stock Exchange. Samples used in this research were selected using purposive sampling method. This research uses 138 companies (690 observation data) that published its financial statement on December 31 for the year 2005 until the year of 2010. The research result indicates that lagged dividend per share, earnings per share have a significant effect on dividend per share. The result also indicates that cash flow per share, size, controlling shareholder, government ownership, life cycle, tangibility and free cash flow have an insignificant relation with dividend per share.
