Abstract
This study examines students' perceptions of using L1 for translanguaging in the classroom, as well as the parts of the classroom where they use translanguaging and the purpose for doing so. This study involved 29 multilingual students from Universitas Internasional Batam's English major faculty. A survey was used to collect both quantitative and qualitative data by the researchers. Multiple-choice and Likert scale questions were used to collect quantitative data, while open-ended responses were used to collect qualitative data. The qualitative data was used to help explain and support the study's quantitative findings, to provide a more holistic view of the students' perceptions of translanguaging, and to describe their current translanguaging practices in their classrooms. Findings show that students assess translanguaging from 2 aspects, positive and negative. Although they have a positive view of translating in certain situations, they do not often use this pedagogy because it is considered less efficient.
