Abstract

In the last few decades, it has been proven that those who do a lot of Free Voluntary Reading activities show better development in various aspects, especially in vocabulary development. The purpose of this study was to find out what strategies EFL students used to develop vocabulary through personalized reading materials. In addition, this study was also conducted to find out how Free Voluntary Reading help students develop their vocabulary as EFL. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative research design in answering the research questions. Researchers conducted in-depth interviews to the students of EFL class of 2019 and 2020 in the English Language Education Department. There were 11 students (22,4%) who were interviewed in this research. The results showed that the strategies used by EFL students in developing vocabulary through personalized reading materials were as follows: reading authentic materials, choosing reading materials according to genres, making notes about new vocabulary, always looking for any content with English subtitles. In addition, the researcher also found out how several forms of Free Voluntary Reading helped the vocabulary development of EFL students. These forms include: having reading intention, choosing English reading materials, taking advantage of free time to read, watching any content with English subtitles, and listening to English songs with lyrics.
