Abstract

In maintaining the logical flow of ideas from one paragraph to another, learners should practice how to write important part of essays concerning introduction, thesis statement, supportive details, and conclusion. However, there are still some mistakes that the students did in writing their abstract report of thesis. Therefore, this study aims to find out UIB students writing skills through analyzing the use of cohesive devices in the thesis abstract. The data is collected in written form which are 10 thesis abstract of 2019 UIB graduated student batch 2015. Qualitative descriptive method and content analysis is used to analyze and interpreted the data source. In order to explore the cohesive device, it is classified into several types. The results of this research showed that the usage of grammatical cohesive devices is more frequently used by the students rather than lexical. Although they are able to use various of cohesive devices effectively, they seem to lack knowledge and unfamiliar with the usage of other devices. It is suggested that teacher create a lesson material focused on the importance of cohesive devices mainly when teaching writing as it is beneficial for the students to be able to create a well written writing.
