Abstract

Reading and listening play an essential role in students learning English as a foreign language. However, the relationship between reading and listening comprehension is not yet fully understood. Therefore, the present study aims to (1) find out any correlation between reading comprehension and listening comprehension in the UTEP test and (2) how reading comprehension correlates to Listening Comprehension that will be defined from their test UTEP results.This correlation research study used a mixed-method that focuses on collecting, analyzing, and mixing quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data used the correlation technique; to determine whether there was any correlation between reading comprehension and listening comprehension of the UTEP test. The qualitative data were also collected through interviews to figure out how Reading Correlation correlates to Listening Comprehension of UTEP test. The subject of the research was 863 UIB students of 1st Semester English 1 class batch 2020. The data were collected by measuring students listening and reading skills based on their UTEP test. The test consists of 200 questions equally divided into reading and listening parts. Based on the research results, it is known that the correlation coefficient obtained is 0.75. That shows that there is a positive and strong enough correlation between listening comprehension and reading comprehension. This result will become an insightful data for UCLC to designing materials for English 1 and English 2 classes for helping students achieving the standard UTEP score.
